Carpentry

The Carpentry program provides instruction in both finish carpentry and house building. Students are taught design, layout and dimension. Cabinet assembly and installation, as well as, finish carpentry skills are included in the curriculum. Extended activities range include inside construction to house building techniques, remodeling and construction projects within the school and off campus. Course content also includes the identification and application of house building and millwork carpentry theory, the use of hand and power tolls, the study of building materials and building codes, along with the identification of careers opportunities in the Carpentry field. Integrated into these courses are the Massachusetts Core Curriculum Frameworks (Science, Mathematics, and English/Language Arts), which represent the revised statewide guidelines for learning, teaching and assessment. These academics will crosswalk into the Carpentry competencies. 

Upon graduation, students are employable as house-siders, framers, millworkers, lumberyard workers, remodelers for existing homes, as well as, salespersons of carpentry, equipment, tools, and supplies.  Further education  of opportunities are avialable through TechPrep articulation agreements.
  

T601   CARPENTRY 1     TC

Using a competency based, industry relevant curriculum, Carpentry 1 is an introductory course that features techniques and materials of building construction, which includes shop safety, planning, measurement, power tools, building materials, rough cutting, assembly and finishing techniques.

Length: Two semesters ( One block each semester); Credits: 20; Prerequiste: Exploratory; Learning Expectations: 1,2,3,4 and 5 


T842    CARPENTRY 2     TC

This program is for students interested in developing marketable skills in building construction and carpentry. Students receive an introduction to basic rough and finish carpentry which includes foundations; wall, floor and roof framing, installation of windows and doors, and some exterior finish work. Students learn to use a full range of woods, techniques, tools and woodworking machines as they complete their projects.

This couse also includes an embedded Physical Education and Health component.  Students enrolled in this course will not be required to take a seperate Physical Education requirement.

Length: Two semesters ( Two blocks each semester); Credits: 40; Prerequiste: Carpentry 1 and Exploratory; Learning Expectations: 1,2,3,4 and 5 


T991   CARPENTRY 3     TC

This advanced level course is for seniors who have a serious interest and want a future career in the Construction Industry. This course has students use their skills they obtained in Carpentry 2 on interior finish work of doors, floors and ceilings, stairs, wall and roof systems. Hands-on experience is obtained in the shop, school, and community. This course is designed to make students aware of apprenticeship opportunities within the construction field.

This couse also includes an embedded Physical Education and Health component.  Students enrolled in this course will not be required to take a seperate Physical Education requirement.
